The specifications on the newer SG series switches are impressive: switching capacity starting from For our readers' convenience, we've made the following downloads available directly from Firewall. These are easily accessible in our SG Datasheet Download section. The Web interface is highly intuitive but does require some time to understand its layout and where to configure different aspects of the switch.

We found that the best way to configure the switch was to use the CLI interface for specific functions such as setting up IP Addresses, creating and naming VLANs, setting default gateway, then using the web interface for configuring the trunk and access links, allowed VLANs etc. Earlier SG firmware suffered from plenty of problems that could cause the switch to stop processing packets and required a reboot to restore functionality. Most people are not aware that when an SG or SG switch is powered up for the first time, it defaults to Layer-2 mode!

When this is done all configuration is erased and the device is reset, losing any configuration performed. It is therefore highly advisable to always switch to router mode before any configuration is performed on the switch! To switch to router mode, connect to the serial port using the provided DB9 serial cable read up on our serial cable articles for info on DB9 connectors and set the com port thus:.

You will be requested to change the password before you perform any configuration:. When complete, the CLI prompt will be presented along with the familiar hash symbol. At the prompt, enter show system mode to view the current mode:. It is highly recommended that you will backup it before changing the mode, continue?

As the reset process begins, a number of messages will be displayed on the console and the switch will finally reboot:. I-Cache 16 KB. D-Cache 16 KB. L2 Cache KB. Cache Enabled. Preparing to decompress About to erase CDB.

Terminal baud rate will now be set to default! Issuing the show system mode command will then confirm the switch is in router mode, which means we are in business:. When the system uses its default IP address Saving the configuration is easily performed using the classical command:. VLAN creation and IP address configuration are certainly a lot faster and easier through the CLI interface, especially if you make a mistake and need to make corrections.

In our example, this is Once entered, the Getting Started screen is shown:. When configuring a VLAN as Tagged traffic, the port automatically becomes a trunk port and the Trunk option above is greyed out as you cannot disable it — a logical restriction.Need support for your remote team?

You don't have to use a tagged interface for the phones It's almost identical to IOS. Not quite the same but the question mark works. I also do not see tagging for vlan 11 or any native vlan taggingjust Any ports connected to a router or L3 switch should be untagged for vlan 1, and tagged for vlan 10 and The config on the router must also match this tagging on the trunk if it isn't already.

Vlan 11 I believe should be untagged if it isn't access ports on all ports connecting to end devices.

They require the same UTP cables as computers and also use Ethernet. If we want to connect them to a switch, we have two options. You probably want to separate the data from the computer and IP phone. This is something we can do with voice VLANs.

VLAN Configuration on the 200/300 Series Managed Switches

It will look like this:. Behind the scenes, we have a trunk between our switch and IP phone. The port on the IP phone that connects to the computer is an access port. The IP phone will forward all traffic from the computer to the switch untaggedtraffic from the IP phone itself will be tagged. We configure the interface in access mode and use VLAN for the computer.

We can also take a look at the trunk status. Although this will show us that the interface is not-trunking, it does tell us the two VLANs that are used:.

Above we see that VLAN and are allowed on this interface. Although it shows up as non-trunking, keep in mind that in reality, this is a trunk. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment in our forum. Yes you are correct in your description. Any traffic coming from the PC through the phone will be untagged and will go to the access VLAN configured on the port of the switch.

All voice traffic is tagged and will go to the voice vlan configured on the port of the switch. In other words, a Quality of Service technique is automatically incorporated into the functionality of.

In the past, before the advent of the switchport voice vlan command you would have to configure a port as a trunk port that included both the voice and data VLANs.

It was around 10 years ago when I was first learning about Cisco IP telephony where we would use such a configuration. Back then, connections to IP phones were literally trunks. Today however, we use ports configured with voice VLANs.

Such a port will have both the switchport mode access command as well as the switchport voice vlan command. So is this an access port or a trunk? Consider IP phone is non-cisco.

The IP phone will forward all traffic from the computer to the switch untagged, traffic from the IP phone itself will be tagged. Ask a question or join the discussion by visiting our Community Forum. Skip to content Search for: Search. You could c.

Cisco SMB Switch VLAN Configuration

Previous Lesson How to configure Trunks. Next Lesson So I have been at this for about a week now with a lot of trouble along the way. Everything is working so far and we can even register our Cisco IP phones. The problem is, they will only register as an access port assigned to our voice VLAN. If I try to trunk to port to allow both Voice and Data, the phone refuses to register.

The only way I have been able to register the phone is by making the port an access port and allowing the Voice VLAN specifically, doing this no data can transfer to the attached computer. If you don't need the smart port function turn it off.

That "feature" kicked me in the pants for 2 days. I would set a trunk vlan on a port, plug in a computer and the smart port would reassign the port back to vlan 1. If I reset the port it would stay the way I wanted until I unplugged and plugged in the device back in. Now if you want to use the smart port function, it does have its uses.

You just need to set it so that when it sees a phone it sets the right vlans specific for a phone assuming a PC will be behind the phone.

You will want the smart port function to tag the voip lan and untag the data lan. Access ports belong to only one VLAN, trunks belong to all by default. If you do not specify a VLAN for an access port, it defaults to 1. Also, access ports do not tag frames either dot1q or isl which is required for trunks to separate traffic.

Second, you are thinking of traditional ios that has the voice vlan command and makes what is operationally a trunk port seem like a 'special' access port. Then of course you need your voice server on the same VLAN probably on an access port or if you are hosted you may need inter-vlan routing to let them reach the Internet or wherever. Sorry for the delay, just got back into work. We have a couple of different models of Cisco IP phones, the one I am specifically using to make sure they work with the switch is a CP Brandon, I'll try to turn off the macro smartport and see if that helps at all.

We are running the switches in Layer 2 mode and would prefer to keep it that way if at all possible with our setup. Also, thanks! Been lurking around for answers but can't find anything specific so I decided to make an account and ask away haha. Hmm, so I couldn't shut off macro smartport with that command and can't seem to figure out how to disable it.

This is odd to me and I'm not sure what to enter here. Also there is still no data getting through to the computer from the phone. Sounds like that phone lost config and is asking to be setup from scratch. And Frank did touch on an important point.

Voice VLANs - What are they and why do we need them?

Access type ports have all vlan information removed. Trunk ports have all information tagged. And General is the mix where it allows untagged traffic and tagged traffic if present. Then configure your phone to use the voip vlan.
