The best deals are the late s Japanese bikes, the ones you want have aluminum alloy wheels, but a steel lugged frame. In the mid to late s, the dollar was strong against a weak Yen, the Japanese were producing world class bikes and selling them in the U.

This ended about and started about so you want to look for bikes from that time period only. Afterbikes became overly complicated and the frame quality declined as the Japanese economy was pulling ahead. The middles of the tubes are thin. Paint scratches are O. People selling bikes often give false measurements so you need to bring a metric tape measure. The seat post clinch bolt is usually only turnable on the chainwheel side remember, one side does NOT spin.

Sometimes people put the clinch bolt in backwards though, so carefully try the other side if the bolt on the chainwheel side does not spin easily. Be notified of when new workshops are live here. If you have any further suggestions, please do let me know. Glad it made your list. I have a Haro MTB or all-terrain?

I was wondering if I sent you some pictures of it, could you possibly tell me something about it? It looks similar to an Extreme, but only has the word Haro and some very 80s graphics printed on the frame, so I am unsure what model it is. I have zero knowledge on this subject, but am interested in learning more.

Thanks in advance for your time. The simplest thing would be if you could upload them to an online image hosting site like photobucket.

I owned a red Bridgestone MB1 when they first came out, as I recall it was an less expensive knock of of the Scott Pro bike. I love that bike, rode the shit out of it put all kinds of better parts on it which included one of the nylon disc covers you could add to your back wheel.

I moved on to a Klein Pinnacle, bought a frame built it from scratch spent between grand on it. Klein replaced it, It later was damaged in a garage fire and my insurance totaled it I bought it back for cheap upgraded to XTR, Avid levers, and Chris King rear hub with the insurance money. I rode her again till the hub and manitou fork failed, that was a couple years ago. I have recently gathered the parts I needed to make her good as new and dropped her off at the shop yesterday for a full like new rebuild, I will post pics when I get her back.

I forget what they call the back tire. Brand New from Japan New chainrings and pulleys and cables and rim tape and tubes and grips…. Hi Mike, your Klein sounds really sweet! Bike technology, of course, changes, but nowhere near as fast as computer technology. Many older bikes are still quite useable and still satisfy the casual recreational user. Indeed, many well-made used bikes are much better than some department store bikes today.

The bikes here are grouped here into six, somewhat arbitrary, categories: Road - lightweight bikes for traveling on streets. The road bicycles are the museum's largest category and are divided by manufacturer, with first U. The country designations are somewhat arbitrary. For example, Raliegh was historically an English company. Univega was headquartered in the United States with bicycles made in Italy and then Japan.

Finally, no matter where a company is headquartered, the majority of bikes today are made in China. Hybrid - allow a more upright riding position and riding over more rugged terrain at some lost of efficiency.

Mountain - sturdy bikes which allow riding off road. Most today have front shocks and sometimes rear shocks. The modern mountain bike had its origins in the late s and early s. Racers were reasonably efficient, sturdy, utilitarian machines that were heavier than road bikes and were not really "racers. Specialty - here I include recumbent, folding and stationary bikes.

With recumbent bikes, the rider sits lower and leans back in a more prone position resulting in less aerodynamic drag. Kids - kids can, of course, ride smaller adult bikes. Many bike models cater especially to kids, however, or to the inner child of adults.

How To Buy an Amazing Road Bike for under $200

Even more than with adult bikes, sometimes the looks and style of kids bikes take a back seat to functional design.

Kids bikes use to often have 24 inch diameter wheels. In the early s, however, Schwinn came out with the Stingray with small 20 inch diameter wheels, high handlebars and a banana seat.

The name played off muscle cars at the time and the bikes had a look of a chopper motorcycle. Eventually, the Stingray evolved into the BMX bike with somewhat shorter handlebars, a single saddle, and beefy rims.

BMX bikes are used for dirt racing, jumps and tricks. Today, "beach cruisers" are the craze for both adults and kids creating a look and feel of the old balloon tire bikes of the s through s. Modified cruisers were also used for the first Mountain bikes in the late s. Unfortunately, a cruiser is an efficient design for a bike whether on or off the road.

They are heavy, harder to pedal and harder to steer. Most bikes are used for recreation. I use to use mine to commute to school, however.

Besides being fun and great exercise, they use no gasoline, do not contribute to global warming and do not pollute. Their manufacture and maintenance, of course, does contribute to pollution and global warming, however. Click on a category below, and pedal off to a great adventure!
